I once used a popular compression program "just to try it out" with windows 3.1. I had a system with multiple hard drives, so I compressed one drive and left the others uncompressed. Installing the compression program was easy and trouble-free. I didn't even have to copy my files off of it. Shortly thereafter however, I experienced an scary, occasional, intermittent hang on boot while the system was loading some files related to the compression utility. Also, since the disk drive free space became "approximate," I could no longer have a clear understanding of how much space was really left on that drive. I concluded that that I should return the drive to uncompressed and was quite disappointed to find that while the utility makes it super easy to "compress" a normal drive, it provided no such provision for returning a compressed drive to normal. I had created a mess for myself since I had to completely unload that drive and I didn't have enough space on my other drives to temporarily store all that stuff while I reformatted the compressed drive.

My recommendation - if you're not compressed, wait till you can get a larger drive. A little hard drive housecleaning can go a long way.
