Militarily, Iraq was easy. Politically, it was not thus it was near impossible to hold. It got our foot in the door to get in on their oil though.
Afghanistan kind of the same. Militarily, we took all the key cities and areas. I don't know that we really wanted to hold it as there wasn't anything we needed there other than to get Osama bin laden. Fast forward to today and they do have rare earth minerals so it would have been nice to secure some of that. It looks like China is going to get there first now though.
Afghanistan is a can of worms so I hesitate to get into it. History shows no one has ever been able to hold Afghanistan. I think where we were at the time of the election was probably about right though. Only about 2500 troops, mainly as advisors/support and providing safe air support with low risk to our people. Things were under control. A few weeks ago that all went out the window and we are right back where we started 20 years ago. The actions of one village idiot.
