Without question, China’s foreign policy and investments are not altruistic. But then again, neither is anyone else's, including the US.

I have often heard that the US has not had any territorial conquests. This is both untrue and misleading.

One does not conquer a land just to look bigger on a map. You do it to secure access to resources, secure trade markets, and own geopolitical high grounds. If you can do all this by installing friendly governments, running a network of 700+ military bases around the world, and bombing and sanctioning anyone who does not offer favourable trade deals, then why would you want to incur the cost of occupying a country?

Being smarter in achieving the same goals does not make one more benign.

But to be fair, not every mess that the US has gotten into has been entirely of its own accord. A lot of countries over the years have engaged in what I call "rent-a-superpower" and ripped the rewards of getting the US involved where it shouldn't have been. Examples include the British pushing the overthrow of the Iranian government in the '50s, the Australians pushing for Vietnam, the Israelis... Well let's not go there.
