The basic political science, well articulated by Niccolo Machiavelli states that you should always align yourself with the power that is further away from you without antagonizing the one near you. While the Soviet Union was around, a lot of countries walked this tightrope. Africa in contrast prefers China over EU (and to a smaller extent over the US) for exactly the same reason. European countries are more likely to use military force in Africa than China is.
