A couple of tidbits. In America, a new season picks up where the old one ended. In Japan, the story continues while the off season is happening and you get to see it some point in the future where you get to discover what had happened to the characters (as well as the new storylines).

The Hattori Hanzo character (the sword maker), from what I heard, was a continuation of a role that he had played long time ago. So the inside scoop was that you got to see what had happened to him. He had swore off making swords and being a hero and had retired to be an obscure sushi chef.

Gordon Liu was chosen for the part of Pai Mei b/c he had played a Shaolin monk hero trained by the head abbot. QT thought it was fun for him to be the villain who had slain the Shaolin monks.
