Maybe they try harder there? Sometimes that's what it takes. Found this on the Ericy web site:

Ericsson aims for a big slice of the market
"Mr. Skold concedes that Ericsson's competitors in Brazil have similar plans, but the company is in a good position to take a big slice of the market. In conventional switching equipment, it has a 41 percent market share, followed at some distance by Alcatel (15 percent), Equitel (14 percent), NEC (13 percent), and Tr¢pico (11 percent) with other suppliers taking the remaining 6 percent of the market.

This article is pretty dated but gives you an idea of the relative market share. I think Ericy has if anything increased it's share.

One line is especially out of date:
"Nor does the Government plan an immediate leap to privatization"

Wrong. It's going to happen this summer.

There's a lot of money to be made in Brazil in the next few years.
( Ericy is big in Argentina too )
