A neighbor shot a 500 + lb bear last week that had been marauding through the neighborhood all Summer. He posted the kill on FB and Fish and Wildlife were immediately knocking on his door. He told them the bear charged him and he had no choice, but he is still being investigated for baiting.............which I firmly believe is exactly what he did. His mother complained to us that he wouldn't secure their garbage and she'd been after him to do so for weeks.

There is absolutely no reason that bear had to die.

Another neighbor responded to him on his FB page that the bear had broken into their back yard and gotten into their garbage twice, and F&W told that neighbor if they don't secure their garbage they will be fined. So this neighbor is building a bear proof cage to keep the garbage can in and F&W told him when he's done they will inspect it to make sure it will work. If not, he'll have to keep working on it until it's properly constructed.

We keep our garbage can in the garage at night behind a metal door, and have zero problems with bears.

;)
