Question: Dos so called scare quotes fit in with accepted grammar rules? And if so do you follow the same rules as when you use them to show a verbatim quote?
Lots of grammar rules and almost impossible to follow every one of them and still get your point across.

I don’t know the answer to your question but I’ll borrow something from an editor I know: Forget the rules. Does it make sense? Does it flow? Will the reader know what you’re saying? The rules are there as a guide to help the writer communicate and not look stupid.
