Can't you see how much more civilized we are today than 100 years ago when women could not vote and we had two world wars and we were just 60 years past slavery?

As Steven Pinker said in his book:" the Nature of our Better Angles" this is the most peaceful time in history.

And speaking a lot of languages does not mean one is smart, a five year old child could speak 6 languages if one lived in an environment that allowed that.

I read this weirdly fascinating book a few years ago by William Byrd, Virginia plantation owner and ancestor of the W. Virginia political dynasty.

A typical passage, paraphrased from memory:

Tuesday: Got up this morning and read some Plato [in the original]. Checked the fences by the river.Gave the wife a flourish and had the slave girl whipped.

Wednesday: Have to get ready to go to the Assembly this evening. Read some Marcus Aurelius. I'm worried about the prices we'll get from the tobacco we're shipping to England. Gave the slave girl a flourish and had the wife whipped.
