That is nice - we had a tradition of open debate in our family too - but I don't think I knew of any Republicans in our family - it was more conventional or left-leaning. It was an environment that didn't deride someone who feels differently if they had their facts in line. Having an opinion was expected to be followed up for why that opinion was valid. There are often reasonable viewpoints that lead one to feel differently based upon different ideas of how far harms actually radiate from the central actors. There was no gender-based final authority that I recall in more lively discussions. For instance we discussed politics, war, draft evasions, jail and drug crimes.

An example: How far should a society go to help those that seem to resist external help or lack the ability to help themselves? Some institutions such as jail / prison have such poor track records - anyone calling those up should have to imagine themselves there and how'd they would fare. The possibility of being wrongly convicted just doesn't exist in some people's heads. Some people are born into deeply unhappy situations and others are born with very poor eyesight. Why should society treat the former so much more harshly than the latter?

If someone with poor vision were to find their way around the streets using a device they found on their own, would we jail them for the illegality of it? That is basically the problem with drug addicts.
