It would be nearly impossible to live in Diamond Bar and not have been to Walnut <vbg>. They snake in and out of one another and were both working ranches before they became "civilized."

I was not one of the residents of "Phillips Ranch" who used a Diamond Bar Zip Code. The fact was, I lived in Pomona. Period. As for city services, Pomona had it all over those surrounding upscale communities--hands down!

Baldwin Park is very much like Pomona. When I grew up there, it was mostly citrus groves and dairy farms. No one locked their doors and nighttime bicycling and strolling were commonplace. The school system had an excellent reputation well into the late 1960s, but that's another story. Pomona and Baldwin Park were good places to grow up in in those long-ago days. Today, both are places where one is just plain lucky if they manage to live long enough to grow up.

I know what you mean about the communities all running into one another and the boring sameness of it all. Even quaint and historic Benicia has gone the franchise route to some degree. A book I think you would like very much is "The Franchiser." I can't remember the author's name off hand. It is an acerbic and witty account of how everything looks the same, no matter where you go. I loaned my copy to someone and never got it back.
