I usually don't answer phone numbers I don't know especially if they look fake. I let the answering utility on the VOIP deal with it.

Or I pick up and listen without saying anything - if I hear a crowd of voices in the background I hang up. Since my wife hands out our landline to parents and students - to avoid offending anyone - I say "I'm sorry - I can't hear you - you will have to call back." and just hang up.

That has never produced a call-back.

Answering "hello" twice seems to be a spammer "CAPTCHA" technique to screen humans from answering machines. I've also answered - "Boiler room? Hello? Boiler room?" (slang for a telemarketer call center). That has caught some off guard.

Maybe next time I should ask them if they have extended the warranty on their car, if they would like to answer a survey, or buy solar panels. I'll just need the first 5 digits of their SS number, a credit card and that code on the back.
