I have often thought your form of government would be better.

The conservatives are actually easy to understand. What we humans have done, IMO, is sort of divided ourselves into people with knowledge and people who don't have so much.

We call them Democrats and Republicans :)>, the two tribes it is turning out.

E.g. in the US it is consistently the urban areas e.g. the east and west coast versus the rural areas the Midwest and south.

The difference is, IMO, that people in urban areas collectively have more information and so have replaced old primitive ideas with more modern and complex ideas, like Socrates social contract.

But in the rural areas, and especially the south, people are still living according to old primitive ideas which also too often include racism, sexism and homphobia.

If one looks closely to the people the Republicans elect to congress they are mostly very terrible people, and one has to wonder why they do that? And worse, they elect people who are not in their best interest.

For example, the south is the poorest part of the county and needs all the help they can get, but they elect Republicans that vote against the social programs they need, like Manchin, and won't even expand Medicaid which gives health insurance to the poor for only 10% of state costs.

Thomas Frank wrote a book:" what is wrong with Kansas" that explores that.

It is tribalism IMO.

So what Krugman, who is very smart, is pointing out is that the "Democratic "moderates" sort of married the right wing to win elections, but in the process lost their soul.

and you wonder why I find US politics confusing ...

Dems are like the Holy Trinity LOL ) not being religious...I am not ... but I was raised Catholic I find the Dems as confusing as the Trinity ,..

BTW at the rate Our Mr. Trudeau is squeezing out the NDP (our left of centre party_ Bernie would qualify as a Liberal up here now... or an NDPer

Always a hoot to me when he called a commie LOL

I find the Reps a little less confusing ... then again Libertarian and Religious Right as allies does not compute for me either :)
