But back to the negative stuff about the last century. In my view, any serious argument that life is unquestionably better over the last century than previous centuries, needs to go into detail. Just a gross over generalization without them. Living standards are better; tools for violence are more extreme; ethnic slaughter is in much larger numbers (the holocaust is just an illustration). Totalitarianism is on the rise--Hungary, Turkey, Poland, stronger elements within the US, France, Germany, and Italy. And on and on.
The problem with these kinds of over generalizations is they are their own worst enemy. They don't persuade; they either get in the way of clear thinking or become their own criticism. |
