We are getting wiser, otherwise how do you explain the worldwide gains in humanity and civil rights over such a short time?

Hitler simply had better weapons. Hitler was able to kill more people because he had more powerful weapons.

Imagine if Genghis Khan or the Romans had modern weapons, or many other despots?

The variable is modern weapons not lack of wisdom. Are we wise enough yet---a resounding NO!

Look how fewer people have been killed in the last 60 years than the 60 years before that with even better weapons, so wisdom is working. We had two world wars between 1900 and 1960 in Europe, and today we have the European union.

I would say that is a huge statement on our wisdom. For 15,000 years Europe has been at war, and now they are essentially one country.

But humans are very imperfect and if we don't get rid of nuclear weapons, sooner or later someone will use them.

We may have gotten "demonstrably smarter in the last hundred years" but overall we are no wiser. In the last 100 years well over 100+ million people have been slaughtered in numerous conflicts. Many things that have been invented over that period are soon turned into ways to kill & control other humans. And these smarter people have developed the means to eradicate all life on the planet if they so choose. As I said, no wiser.
