John:"

"But back to the negative stuff about the last century. In my view, any serious argument that life is unquestionably better over the last century than previous centuries, needs to go into detail".

koan: "Just asked any African American, gay person or a woman if there lives are better than 100 years ago when African Americans in the south were segregated like dirty animals not able to drink out of the same fountain, go to the same bathroom or school, etc!

Imagine how horrible it was to not be able to even get your kid to a bathroom. I think if when I had my little girls.

Or when women could not even vote, or often go to the college they wanted, and had many few rights and were mostly subjugated by males and has to endure horrible abusive marriages..

Or gays who had to stay in the closet and could never marry.

Just listen to the first TWO minutes of his lecture.

Surely you can do that!

He was a wise man!

Frankly, I would much prefer a quote from sort of online source. I'm not interested enough in this conversation to listen to an 18 minute lecture. Well, tell you what, if you will tell me the time points within the lecture in which he makes those points, that might help.

But back to the negative stuff about the last century. In my view, any serious argument that life is unquestionably better over the last century than previous centuries, needs to go into detail. Just a gross over generalization without them. Living standards are better; tools for violence are more extreme; ethnic slaughter is in much larger numbers (the holocaust is just an illustration). Totalitarianism is on the rise--Hungary, Turkey, Poland, stronger elements within the US, France, Germany, and Italy. And on and on.

The problem with these kinds of over generalizations is they are their own worst enemy. They don't persuade; they either get in the way of clear thinking or become their own criticism.
