Occoms razor, the most likely answer is usually the correct answer.

Mass public education taught millions of people, new to deep thinking, how to think abstractly which was new, and that spawned the modern civil rights awareness.

One cannot see what one does not understand, and people could not see civil rights until they were better educated..

public education put that evolution on hyper speed. It could also be that the earth has experienced an exponentially growing population for the last few hundred years. If progress is made by the-one-in-a-million genius, then there are 7,750 people making progress now while 60 years ago there were only 3000.
