M2 PRESSWIRE-5 February 1998-MATSUSHITA: Single-chip MPEG2 video encoder LSI for portable consumer-use multimedia product (C)1994-98 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd., Matsushita Research Institute Tokyo, and Matsushita Electronics Corporation, best known for their Panasonic brand products, have jointly developed a single-chip MPEG2 video encoder LSI which is suitable for future multimedia products such as MPEG2 digital video camcorders, DVD video recorders, and advanced multimedia PCs. The new LSI realizes the industry's lowest power consumption using a new architecture developed by Matsushita. Its new architecture makes it possible to control multiple parallel hardware circuits using only one built-in controller.

This single-chip MPEG2 video encoder LSI will be announced on February 5 at ISSCC '98 (International Solid State Circuit Conference to be held in San Francisco, U.S.A. from February 5 to 7). Sample shipment is planned for June 1998, at a price of approximately 20,000 Japanese yen.

As conventional MPEG2 video encoders consisted of several LSIs and memory chips, their cost, board size and power consumption needed to be reduced for wider use in consumer products.

Features:

1.Realization of lowest power consumption of 0.95W and smallest chip size of 100 sq mm, allowing for its use in portable products.

2.Operation modes, such as high-resolution mode or low power mode which can be selected according to the application.

3.All MPEG2 encoding can be processed with this LSI and two 16Mbit SDRAM.

The LSI has been realized by three newly developed technologies:

1.Motion estimation circuit with maximum performance of 128GOPS,

2.Multitasking RISC controller to control all processes,

3.Adaptive clock control technology which realizes low power consumption.
