One might argue that wage slavery in Marx's day was more "efficient" than chattel slavery. A plantation owner had to make large investments in labor, and had to feed, clothe and house them. If grossly mistreated, they were less motivated, or simply died, zeroing the return. Meanwhile, in the cities Marx wrote about, labor required minimal investment, did not have to be maintained beyond a pittance of a wage, and was extremely disposable and replaceable.
