Texas-based American Airlines and Southwest Airlines brush off Gov. Abbott’s ban on employer vaccine mandates

Fort Worth-based American Airlines, which employed 102,700 people at the end of last year, said in a statement that Gov. Greg Abbott’s order, “does not change anything for American Airlines."

"We will continue to comply with Federal law and the best interests of our employees and passengers.”

“We are reviewing the executive order issued by Gov. Abbott, but we believe the federal vaccine mandate supersedes any conflicting state laws,” American Airline's CEO told reporters.

Southwest Airlines has been struggling with many of their scheduled flights being cancelled after the Pilots Union sued Southwest to stop requiring vaccinations. But CEO Gary Kelly said he sees no other way to proceed. Southwest had more than 60,000 employees in 2019.
