News - New President Named For Health Management Division

WAYNE, Pa., Feb. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Covalent Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:CVGR) announced that David Shapiro, MD, has been appointed as President of Covalent's Health Management Division. Shapiro was until recently President of the Medical Research Center of Scripps Clinic, La Jolla, California, and previously held positions as Vice President of Clinical Research at Gensia and Director of Clinical Research at Merck and Co., Inc.

In his new position, Dr. Shapiro will be directing Covalent's expanding activities in health management and research services, including Covalent's Virtual HouseCall, which uses interactive speech and voice recognition to provide patient education and other services to patients and health care providers.

"David brings a wealth of experience to Covalent and is one of the recognized thought leaders in clinical research," says Bruce LaMont, President and CEO. "His experience in conducting clinical research in both large pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, and at academic medical centers, will further expand the experience base of our Company. He will be establishing a West Coast office for the Company in addition to promoting our Virtual HouseCall and other programs designed to improve the health populations of patients."

-Dr. Shapiro was educated at the University of Dundee in Scotland and undertook postgraduate training in the University Hospitals in Oxford, England.

-Shapiro is an elected Board Member of the American Academy of Pharmaceutical Physicians and

-Serves as Vice President of Promotional Development for that organization.

- He is the Chairman of the Continuing Medical Education Committee of the Drug Information Association.

-He has given numerous talks and chaired seminars and symposia related to clinical research in recent years.

-Shapiro will continue to act as a Senior Consultant to the Medical Research Center of Scripps Clinic, which he founded.

Covalent Group provides drug development and health management research and systems to drug and device manufacturers, as well as to managed care organizations. To aid its pharmaceutical and managed care customers, Covalent has developed an automated data collection system using an interactive voice recognition system.
