If they didn't do this or wanted to put Netscape on they were threatening them with discontinuing their Windows license] No, you're wrong about MSFT prohibiting the addition of Netscape. They let the computer makers ADD whatever they want, including Netscape. They just can't SUBTRACT and still sell it as Windows. To understand why, look at all the confusion in the Unix market. There are many different "flavors" of Unix, and this fragmentation is a big disincentive to developers because they have to sell a modified version of their code for each flavor, a tremendous burden. MSFT wants there to be a clear least common denominator that all Windows developers can count on. This is perfectly sensible.
