My opinion about keeping physical gold/silver for a "crisis" is that it is silly.

"Gold and/or silver/copper has had immediately recognizable value." Really by whom?

You couldn't show a bar or bullion to me, I wouldn't believe it's real.

Gold coin? Maybe it would be real. Maybe not. I'd not know. If it was presumed very valuable indeed, then it likely would price me out of a trade if I had such a coin or coins.

Take it to a gold dealer? You have to believe you would to find such a business up and running in the "crisis".
