No idea why Alphabet sold Boston Dynamics, but I think their recent moves into robotics AI are good investments for the future:
  • Alphabet started new subsidiary Intrinsic for robotics software: Message 33409519
  • DeepMind announced his year that they are moving on to robotics AI Message 33511545
  • DeepMind announced the results of their first robotics AI project, stacking colored blocks Message 33529245
While their shape-stacking robotic AI is at the intelligence level of maybe a kindergarten student, it is nonetheless an impressive start. If anyone can crack the robotics AI problem it is DeepMind.
