Yup this is a bad developing situation no doubt. When the INTC reorganization came out early Dec., I said "oh-oh". But hey what can we do. Don't know much about INTC's SOC development. Theoretically LSI has a significant IP advantage. And if you read my earlier posts their DCAM chip has a 1-year advantage over the rest of the field. But we shall just have to wait and see. INTC knows how to switch gears and it should be interesting. But as Diana hinted at yesterday lots of companies are trying to enter this field. But I suspect it isn't trivial. Yet there are tons of IP start-ups popping up. So it would theoretically become easier for the INTCs and NSMs to just go and purchase the IP. This is probably the long term model. But LSI still has a few years at the least. And remember the consumer electronics IC market is huge with a very high growth rate. And LSI went from about 0 in 1994 to around 430 million this year (250 of which is Sony!). So LSI is likely quite good in this area and the number of design wins attest to this strength. BTW we don't really know how well integrated INTC's design is. Also INTC may have a hidden agenda here - make sure everything is somehow PC linked since I would suspect that they like their MPU market and want to build/maintain it! INTC's 60% or 50% margins are going down! And LSI is the dominant consumer electronics chip maker.....
