Yes, I don't think giving government more money is a good idea, unless the government can clearly articulate exactly how they will use the money and who benefits from it. And not just in some wishy-washy hand waving kind of way saying that it helps the "middle class" or "the rich should pay their fair share" or other slogans.

Make your case - e.g. we are spending X on policing inner cities and spending Y on prisons. We are going to do A, B, and C and expect that over the next N number of years this will reduce our crime rate and by extension the policing costs. If it doesn't, then we'll stop it and come up with a different plan.

As to whether or not a better system than Capitalism exists - that is a wrongly worded statement. Things exist on a spectrum. Pure free enterprise exists only in failed states and other shitholes. So clearly "Capitalism" (upper case C) is not the answer. Just as clearly, soviet style socialism also doesn't work. Somewhere in the middle there is a sweet spot. That sweet spot likely changes according to the times. For a society to be able to find that sweet spot and be able to change it, the people need to be free, informed, and engaged. The US political system does not allow for any of those 3 items - and this is exactly how the ruling classes like it.

So my vote is not for more taxes or less taxes. It is for the people who will at least try to change the system, even if they are likely to fail.
