WORLDCOM INC applied with Japanese regulators for a licence to
offer local and long-distance telephone services in the Japanese
market. The company, based in Jackson, Mississippi, will lay its
own fibre-optic cable network in Tokyo and then spread to other
regions of the country if they are believed to be profitable,
Steve Liddell, president of WorldCom Asian Pacific Ltd told
