Eh, maybe? I don't have time to look much now but with a quick scan found this, if it can be shipped or picked up in a reasonable timeframe I'd choose this HP over those Dells. You have to understand at this price point any laptop will have its warts.

The chip is a bit better, as are the ports, it doesn't have the brightest screen but neither have great screens, imo. Supposedly both ram slots are addressable so I'd advise an immediate upgrade to 16gb or better yet 32gb ram. Hell, catch me in a generous mood and I'd buy the upgrade for him. The way that Dell reads, I suspect one of the ram sticks is soldered into a slot but don't have time to confirm that now. As I said, there are almost always tradeoffs in the price category.
