You wonder why there are so many injuries these days in the game, and one thing is the physics of it (heavier and faster players). However, the other aspect of that is the players wear much less padding than they did in the past, and you can see it really clear in that film clip.

Tight ends these days are wearing pads 1/4 the size of what kickers used to wear back in the day.
