That usually never happens but you see it with some start ups like biotech. They need the cash to theoretically bring a drug to market and the approval process. Some of the accountants here may want to weigh in. Generally, most profitable companies would start to buy shares at some level.

A lot of investors are against buy back plans because many buy shares when the market is high.

You do see companies go private, often by a hedge fund or other institution providing the cash as well as taking majority ownership interest.

Private companies still have stock and someone or something owns it.
