My very first job out of university was to be the Unix system administrator. In those days there were no classes or certifications for it. All Unix SA's grew organically and were effectively the system managers in a role that today is split into 3 or 4 positions.

Anyways, the director interviewing me asked about my work style. I told him that I run my systems like captain Kirk ran the Enterprise; all he needs to do is to ask me to go from A to B and it will be done, or I will tell him out front that it won't. And just like Kirk, I will not allow anyone to interfere with how I run the ship. Any time some alien took over the Enterprise, Kirk would issue the autodestruct command.

I actually got the job and when I left I received one of the best recommendation letters :)
