Perhaps you could briefly explain the origins and history of salsa, Mephisto. I was under the impression that it was a very specific dance. Now, from what you are saying, anyone in a bar drinking a few margaritas could improvise and do a perfectly acceptable rendition.

I think our rains are going to last until next Monday. There are still three huge storms just off the coast, courtesy of El Nino. A very fierce one is scheduled to begin late this evening, with gale-force winds.

I was going to buy some of the new colored calla lily bulbs--I think they come in blue, pink and yellow, and perhaps green--and plant them in the garden. But considering how muddy it is, I think I will wait until the sun has been out a couple of days.

It is a little strange being in the middle of a disaster area. Unless you are directly affected, it seems somewhat surreal. I know that people were evacuated a half mile away, and houses across the ravine in Forest Hill are slipping off their sites. But since I am warm, dry, and safe, it doesn't sink in somehow.

Is your friend who may lose her house someone where you live, or someone down here?
