I suppose it often depends what dogs you grow up with. In my case it was a mix of Boxer, Shepherd and Giant Schnauzer.

From what I know, most military / police dogs remain with their handlers in retirement.

I think most dogs, regardless of breed, have the potential to be “Man’s Best Friend”. If they are not, it’s rarely the dog’s fault.

Since you mention dog names … “Shadow” would also be a good name for Bella, our current Shepherd but being a rescue, she came with a name and Bella actually suits her. “Gluestick” is what I often call her. She responds equally well to both names :-)

Breed preferences in general … I think most dog people have them to some degree. If there is no breed preference, there is usually a size preference.
