By far in vast majority of cases the prosecution would have won, the reason they were ballsy taking it to trial.
Very much depends on the state as well. In Florida a man shot a home invader who threatened his kid in his home, got life, vast majority of such cases. His lawyer successfully argued self defense. The plea deal was probably life if there was any, so he had nothing to lose. If defense wins you walk, the prosecutor can appeal on the basis of legal error, but does not get another chance. Such is US legal system and the presumed innocence and double jeopardy.

You could say when you use self defense and a weapon inside your home on an intruder, in vast majority of cases up you get a murder charge and a life sentence.
