I would answer “it’s complicated”. If home invader is a thief and is unarmed and you shoot him outside the home in the back, you are fucked. Who brushed up on self defense laws when faced with a home invasion?

I saw another case way back when a homeowner shot the intruder who broke in his kids bedroom window and went in for life. You kill someone with a gun, expect defense to be complicated.
