The article discusses the evolution of methane from suspended organic material, which is produced as a result of photosynthesis enhanced by run-off of agricultural fertilizers. If the dam were not there, more fertilizer would reach the ocean and stimulate production there. Oceans are also a significant source of methane, agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com. It’s not clear whether the net-effect of shifting photosynthesis from the ocean to inland waters is positive or negative. (In case anyone wonders, the author of the paper is M. Elizabeth Holmes, not Elizabeth Ann Holmes who is on trial for fraud.)
