Hitachi ASICs to skip quarter-micron

Posted: 6:00 p.m. EST, 2/05/98

By Ron Wilson

SAN FRANCISCO -- Hitachi Ltd.'s ASIC group is planning to skip 0.25-micron technology and move directly from 0.35-micron to 0.18-micron CMOS. Stung by the perception that it has fallen behind in process technology, the ASIC group has begun a major initiative to leapfrog competitors in the intensely competitive CMOS ASIC market.

Hitachi is currently in production on half-micron CMOS for ASICs. The company expects to begin production of 0.35-micron ASICs this summer, near the time when some competitors will be sampling quarter-micron devices.

The company has begun a massive program to correct this lag, according to executives gathered here for the International Solid State Circuits Conference.

A select Hitachi design team has the charter to bring 0.18-micron CMOS into production within 18 months of the 0.35-micron shipment date, and within one year if possible.

The team will rely on 0.18-micron work already under way for advanced DRAMs. A Hitachi manager said that some of this technology may be available for transfer to the ASIC group earlier that had been thought, due to the continuing slowdown in the DRAM market.
