Dale, although Iomega (or for that matter any other company)
is not "required" by law to make pre-earnings announcements,
most companies usually do so to avoid shareholder lawsuits. If
there is a significant disappointment in the near future, the
stock price generally tends to reflect that (through insider
selling), and so the company is obligated, if faced with such
an eventuality, to make all such information public. Remember,
it is in the interest of Iomega to make all news, especially
bad news, public asap to prevent stock manipulation by unethical
insiders.
