The issue is your ears and hearing. Some time between 11 - 14, you lose the ability to discriminate between sounds that you have not been exposed to. No hearing a difference means that you cannot imitate others and fix your own accent. With great time and practice, some people have been able to develop better pitch and sound recognition. This involves recording yourself and a "ground truth" and analyzing both via some signal processing tool. The result is then used to create the feedback loop needed to improve.
