The sign is very important.

If you are filling a leaky bucket of water faster than the water leaks out, after a while you have a full bucket of water.
The other way around you have an empty bucket.

A number of years ago there was a documentary about obesity.

In it there was some poor kid, 100 pounds overweight.

They said that it was so easy to happen -
it was like for ten years he was eating an extra apple
a day over the amount of food required to maintain his normal weight.
Ooooooh - kayyyyyyyyy - but they were not lying.

Besides we were a net energy exporter, which I believe was the first time at least in recent history?
