I should say, it’s premature to conclude that the new strain is a nothing-burger. I noticed remarks by people in the area saying that its severity is similar to Delta’s. But we do not know that definitively. They just now recognized the strain, and it takes time to accumulate data. But my sense is - those folks on the ground will prove to be correct.

To the debate about vaccines. Think of immunity as an ever changing milieu of antibodies and lymphocytes. With repeated exposures, a person's immunity becomes richer, ready to challenge the virus at more fronts. That’s how the virus becomes more or less a common cold. It can still cause symptoms, but we become better prepared to keep it from hurting us in a serious way. It’s like having several partial immunities, where every little bit helps. Current vaccines are no longer as effective, but they’re still advisable - not for everyone, but for the old and for the otherwise vulnerable.
