I was thinking over the weekend that the economists that say GDP growth is basically population growth plus productivity gains may need to augment this argument.

I think with the global obesity epidemic, it may be more accurate to use total population body mass growth (increase in population combined with increase in the total body mass of the existing population) and productivity growth.

The heavier people get, the more they consume of almost everything, except maybe vegetables and gym memberships.

I really think this should be studied and eventually factored in when considering the current economic theory for GDP growth.
