Clark -- Your point is well taken, but Japan was not willing to change its protectionist ways. A decade of stagnation ensued, made worse by that nation's squandering of trillions of yen on overpriced real estate and "prestige" projects, something not likely to occur now.

If SEA cannot right itself in time, where will the next "tigers" be found? China, of course, will be there; India, too, if they can get their religious and political squabbles squared away. Eastern Europe?

Meanwhile, the US industries will continue to consolidate their technological lead and their market share...
