This analysis does not apply to NZ only.

Start with the psychological first:

Kids are driven to think: You can be all that you want to be.

We know that is not true. You are what you can be not what you want to be.

In today's age, the kids get information from the media that such and such guy started from next to nothing and became very successful and bang!
The kid wakes up one day believing he can be that guy!

It goes into his head. If he does not have a close parent telling the usual parent thing:
  • This is going to be harder than you think.
  • Do not get carried away.
  • This thing you are in can unravel
  • Be prepared for consequences.
he is in for serious trouble

If the guy has something that works, and get that first steo of success, it reinforces his belief.
Then he becomes what youth normally does: He think he's bullet proof.
He starts pulling money like magnet.
At this stage he starts listening only to what he has inside his own head.

If the floor is pulled under his feet, he is not falling from the third floor, he is falling from the clouds he had planted his feet on. And that is the reason he loses it.

It can be the case of sexual orientation played a role as he gained acceptance and that acceptance gained was more important to him than the money.

Once failure hit, decamping to Kenya was a way to escape the hardship to contemplate his surroundings without the big rich boy image he got used to.
