The fact that we can see them at all says that they are immense, hundreds to thousands of light years across. Have you ever considered the "period" of a cyclic function this large?

I believe there are lots of creatures left on this earth whose existence is yet to be proved... this does not necessarily mean that they don't exist. We are land creatures and land is only about 30% of this worlds surface. There are still vast stretches of land that are VERY inhospitable to exploration. Why couldn't dragons, unicorns,
sea serpents, etc, really have existed? They are certainly not too far removed from what we know has or does exist.
Look at the tropical rain forests and you will see similar but unique species in relatively close proximity. The "Micro-environment" can support quite a bit of experimental diversity, but only the species that develop characteristics that allow them to leave that evolutionary bubble and propagate widely will be well known.

Catyclismic events can cause all kinds of vagaries... Try to consider all of the possibilities of what happened when that astral body that is believed to have struck just off of Guatemala many aeons ago.
It is currently believed that it may have been one of the causes for the end of the great lizards and the beginning of the great mammals.
It or something like it may certainly have been responsible for the one you pointed out.
While these types of events are relatively rare in a human time frame, they are not in a planetary time frame...

Its all in your perspective.
