VW … If Diess gets tossed, so will (much of) VW’s current EV strategy. Diess’ biggest problem is the Union, IG Metall, which controls the Works Council. If IG Metall wins / gets rid of Diess, it would be major (short term) win for them and a win they need as IG Metall is currently facing some internal disagreements and not just at VW. Some of their representatives on various automotive Works Councils are deviating from the “party line” and many of these disagreements seem to center around the EV topic and the potential consequences for their members from the transition.

It’s a fascinating topic for me and maybe for some others as it’s imho not just a German issue. Will the EV movement change the Union status quo in the automotive industry? One thing seems to be pretty clear to me: The longer Unions hang on to their old mantra of job protection instead of pushing for retraining programs for their members, the more irrelevant they become.

Here is a link to a rather lengthy German article about the IG Metall situation for those (likely very few) who are interested in this topic. It could have a profound impact on the US automotive industry.

?End of autocracy? IG Metall is threatened with a fragmentation of works councils in the automotive industry – analogous to the party landscape?
