I'm not fond of the linear list style here on SI either, but it is possible to navigate through conversations acceptably. What is difficult here is to see when there is a new reply in a conversation. Perhaps a convention on labeling them will help.

I've been splitting time between here and the free Slack site where some of us are hanging out. Once you learn a couple of tricks, tracking conversations is much easier there than it is here.

The Slack format seems to be almost identical to the one at SA. I suspect SA simply bought a Slack license and customized it for their use.

I agree with cemanuel that the SA chat site is pretty dead at this point.
