Hi Salah: It looks like we got it out one week early.....

Novell Ships IntranetWare A Week Early

****Novell Ships IntranetWare A Week Early 10/07/96 OREM, UTAH, U.S.A., 1996 OCT 7 (NB) -- By Bob Woods.
After announcing its new intranet product last month, Novell Inc. [NASDAQ:NOVL] said it began shipping IntranetWare worldwide last week, a week ahead of its own schedule. IntranetWare seeks to capitalize on the current "intranet" craze which uses Internet technologies for in-house company networks.

When the company first announced the product last month (Newsbytes, Sep. 18, 1996), officials said that IntranetWare includes a complete set of Internet access services, like an IPX/IP (Internetwork Packet Exchange/ Internet Protocol) gateway that lets customers add both Internet and intranet access to their current Novell networks.

Included with IntranetWare are all the services that come with Novell's industry-standard NetWare 4.11, including NetWare (World Wide) Web Server 2.5, integrated wide area routing for connecting geographically dispersed local area networks (LANs), file transfer protocol (FTP), and Netscape's Navigator Web browser.

NetWare 4.1 features like Novell Directory Services (NDS), Symmetric Multi Processing (SMP), and intranet and Internet-enables core file and print services are also included in IntranetWare, officials added.

Company officials said IntranetWare "brings together all of the elements necessary to link Novell networks to the Internet and/or a private intranet."

Besides selling full versions of IntranetWare that both do and do not contain NetWare 4.11, Novell is offering customers special upgrade prices for customers who want to include IntranetWare in their networks. The special promotional prices run through January 7, 1997.

IntranetWare is an integrated part of Novell's new marketing strategy, that also incorporates the company's GroupWise and ManageWise software brands (Newsbytes, Sep. 10, 1996). Novell is sinking in $20 million for what analysts call an attempt to re-establish itself as the dominant network operating system (NOS) in the networking market -- even though it still holds between 60 and 70 percent of the NOS category.

Novell's unnamed enemy in the marketing campaign seems to be Microsoft. The software giant's new release of its Windows NT server and workstation software is grabbing headlines in the trade press, Newsbytes notes.

But Novell may hold onto its kingly status in the NOS market. One reseller, quoted by Novell, said his company has a "backlog of requests" for the new IntranetWare.

It looks like the complete package offering has finally arrived. I sure hope the NDS file management feature works well and integrates with the NT directory. Otherwise, let's hope Novell gets this module upgraded and then begins to push the 3rd party applications through 1st and 2nd quarter next year.

According to my calculations this early release should reflect 44 days of upgrade sales in the Q4 numbers. This translates into 48% of the quarter. When does the company book the sales? On shipment, delivery, installation, license date, etc.? Most of these revenues will be site license upgrades. Any thoughts?
