02:03 p.m Feb 06, 1998 Eastern

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (Reuters) - Thousands of people have been killed by a
severe earthquake in northern Afghanistan, spokesmen for the opposition alliance
and the Taliban government said Friday.

The Taliban Islamic government in the capital Kabul, quoted by its official radio
Friday night, said 3,230 people were killed by the quake in the opposition-ruled
Takhar province.

Earlier, the Pakistan-based Afghan Islamic Press (AIP) news service quoted
sources in the opposition alliance as saying at least 3,600 people had died.
Afghanistan's mission at the United Nations said more than 4,000 bodies had been
recovered.
