I believe Trump has been a Russian asset for quite a while. I believe he's been laundering money for the Russians for a long time, and bought his golf courses with their money. Note, asset doesn't mean spy. Some assets are spies, some are just useful idiots, with a whole range in between. Putin and Trump never believed he'd win in 2016. When he did win, I really doubt the intel community and the military ever shared anything with him that Putin didn't already know.
